They say, “If you do what you love, the money will follow.” We misunderstand and make too complicated this wisdom.
When you place the emphasis on the loving instead of the doing, it makes all the difference.
Love is the secret ingredient in every successful small business.
If you love providing the service, creating the product, writing the words, singing the songs, making the art, doing the Thing . . . and you get to do it regularly? Congratulations, you’re an entrepreneur! If you make money enough to keep the business running (so you can keep handing out that gorgeous love), meet your living expenses and have some left for pleasure, education, savings and investments? Congratulations! You’re so in the love-flow that your business is a success and you’re life is comfortable!
I come from a family of solo-entrepreneurs. Five out of six siblings have managed to create very nice livelihoods out of love. We are all artisans of one kind or another–shaping raw material into something beautiful. So, you see, for me, business is always about love, beauty, high quality and service. Around our holiday tables, on car rides and well, just about everywhere, the conversation in my family turned to business: How’s it going? What are you working on? How’d that work out for you? What’s next? How will you take the next step? Seriously, entrepreneurial spirit was in the water in my household.
I’m a Capricorn. Sturdy, ambitious, structured, disciplined, patient. Combine this with other major influences in my chart (spontaneous, creative, leadership, enthusiastic, generous), my upbringing and my natural proclivity toward processing and sharing information and you get someone who’s loves business and whose business is love. I’ve been known to spew forth fully formed business plans and entrepreneurial endeavors at a dinner guest’s mere mention that they dye wool or wish they could spend more time baking cakes. Some people daydream about vacationing in paradise, I decided to move there on a shoestring and start another business. This is how I roll.
I have started more than ten businesses. Some never made me a penny but I loved and nurtured them nonetheless. I currently run three businesses and have steady work I consider a love-offering. I’m not suggesting that’s for you! I’m saying that I have a lot of experience and I understand that failure in business isn’t really failure at all. It’s a learning experience. It’s a building block. It’s a stepping stone. We use those materials to build our success stories on.
If you work with me creating Entrepreneurial Excitement, we’re going to work hard. We’re going to work fast. We’re going to make changes to your business that’ll help you work smarter instead of harder. We’re going to discover what you love most about your business and figure out how to assure you’re spending most of your time doing that. Remember, the love is the key. You don’t want to and you don’t need to be spending all your time doing things you find tedious so you can spend only a tiny bit of time loving what you’re doing. We’re going to make sure you take time off and make time for excellent self-care. We’re going to look at how you think and feel about money as well as getting to the truth about how much you have, how much you need and how much you want. If you have an online business, I’m going to share with you what I know about websites and shortcuts and ways to streamline the tedious so it doesn’t take over your life. If you just have an idea about a business and want help taking a critical but loving look at it, drawing up business plans, figuring out projections for the bank . . . I’m right there with you.
While we’re getting excited and getting things done, we’re also going to be talking about work ethic, beauty, artistry, abundance, spirituality and more love. We’re going to delve deep into the particular talents and gifts you have and how to bring them forth fully so you can be of service in the world. We’re also going to discuss the realities of the culture shift we’re in the midst of and how owning your own business — once considered incredibly risky — is the most reliable way to earn income.
The new economy is based on folks like you and me making something from love so we
can share it with the world because of love.
Todd Rundgren, loving what he does so much he doesn’t realize it’s “work.”
I’m not promising working with me will make you a millionaire, allow you to live in a seaside mansion or drive a Tesla. I’m promising to give you 100% of what I know about building and maintaining a business that allows you to earn a living loving what you do. The amount of money you earn is only limited by your perceptions of the value of your product or service coupled with your ethics around money. I’m happy to put you in touch with former clients of mine who’ve built their small businesses from the ground up while working with me.
